“This Do In Remembrance Of Me.” (1 Cor. 11:24b)
In Our Church Covenant, we collectedly vow “to sustain its (the church’s) worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines.” The observance of Holy Communion is one of the “doctrines” that we vow to continue in practice.
In doing this, we commemorate or celebrate as we are reminded of the last meal that Jesus shared with the disciples before His death on the cross. We are reminded of the events of His life, His suffering, death, and victorious resurrection.
It’s a time of renewal. As we remember the great sacrifice made for our salvation, our faith is renewed. There is an inspiration to become committee followers of our Savior. We are encouraged by the love shown as we are reminded that no greater love have any man, than to lay down his life for a friend. Seeing the extent of God’s love, we’re inspired to love one another as Christ loved us.
Communion is a time of thanksgiving. Here, we give praise and thanks to the only one who could deliver us from sin and repair our broken relationship with our Father. Through the work of the cross, Jesus delivered us from the penalty, power, and eventually the presence of sin. He gives us the “authority” to become sons of God and to receive an inheritance, eternal life.
Then, there’s the visible remembrance, that in doing this, we “proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” There is the encouragement to the believer that the worries and trouble of this life will soon end, and the hope of a new heaven and earth is a reality.
In the mist of this coronavirus pandemic, the observance of the Lord Supper is needed now more than ever. This coming Sunday has dual importance. Not only is it the designated Sunday for communion, but it’s also “Palm Sunday”, when Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem prior to being crucified. The following Sunday is the day when He rose with all power in heaven and earth under His authority.
Therefore, Progressive Union will offer communion to all who wish to participate. We will do this by passing out pre-packaged communion cups on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, April 1-3, 2020, 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please come by and pick up your cup(s) during this time. There will be someone under the canopy at the sanctuary (not the Wayne P. Snodgrass Family Life Center) to pass out the cups and give instruction as to how we will commune. We will commune as we usually do during service this Sunday, April 5 during our live stream.
Reminder: Communion is for Baptized Believers Only
Should you need assistance in getting the communion cup, please call the church office at 256-534-8266 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
